The Latino Business Advisory Council Scholarship Fund announced early June that it has awarded its first two scholarships to two Hillsboro graduating seniors. Jessy Alonso Garcia and Karen Fernandez Fernandez are the first recipients of this newly established scholarship fund through the Washington County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Hillsboro Community Foundation.
Jessy Alonso Garcia was born and raised in Hillsboro, Oregon, to loving Mexican parents. He graduated from Liberty High School this year and enjoys hiking in the great Oregon outdoors and running around Hillsboro. He will be attending the University of Oregon in the fall to pursue Human Physiology, hoping to build a medical career in the future.
Karen Fernandez Fernandez graduated from Century High School and will be attending the University of Oregon in the fall with the intent to major in Neuroscience. During her high school career she took Intro to Health Sciences, Anatomy & Physiology, Health Sciences 1, and CCMA classes. In her Junior and Senior year, she was a part of the Future Health Professionals (HOSA) club and served as club secretary, along with being involved in Key Club, National Honors Society, and soccer.
“This scholarship is a reflection of our community’s commitment to supporting future leaders,” said Fernando Lira and Kevin Guillen, the Chair and Vice Chair for the Latino Business Advisory Council. “Karen and Jessy have already demonstrated tremendous promise, and we are honored to play a small role in helping them pursue their goals and aspirations.”
Established upon the retirement of Deanna Palm, former CEO and President of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, the Latino Business Advisory Council Scholarship Fund was created to empower Latino Hillsboro high school graduates to pursue higher education and vocational training.
This fund stands as a testament to the generosity and shared values that define our community. Click here to make a tax-deductible donation to the LBAC Scholarship fund.
